A Resilient Legacy
For more than 100 years post slavery Durham’s Hayti community inspired and equipped thousands of Durham residents to contradict racial oppression to achieve educational, financial vocational and entrepreneurial success. Neighborhoods flourished with secure Black-owned homes, profitable businesses, high-achieving public schools, and a welcoming cultural hubs that provided enrichment opportunities. A century of unprecedented independence and prosperity achieved by African Americans was upended in 1967 by the construction of NC Highway 147. More than 200 Hayti properties were demolished consequently destroying generations of sacrifice, wealth, and hope. Today, the resilient life force that birthed Hayti’s legacy a century ago is persistent in elders, descendants, and new generations of equity visionaries like HR-JM.This is some text inside of a div block.
